Thyroid Hormone Treatment |
 |
If you have hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism from natural causes, or if your thyroid
gland has been removed, you will need to take thyroid hormones to achieve Continuous
Balance and start living your Life Uninterrupted.
Thyroid hormone replacement (T4:L-thyroxine) replaces the primary hormone your thyroid
gland used to make.
If you've had a thyroidectomy, taking the thyroid hormone tablets helps in two ways:
- It replaces the thyroid hormones that your body used to make on its own, so that you
will not become hypothyroid and your body can continue to function normally.
- It tells the pituitary to make less TSH, so that if thyroid cancer cells are present,
they will not grow so well.
How are you feeling? Talking to Your Doctor
Your doctor may need to adjust your thyroid hormone dose. Talking to your doctor is an
important part of your treatment. In addition to your regular thyroid tests, talking about
hormonal imbalance and the effect this may have on your body will help your doctor assess
whether your hormone replacement is working, or if it needs to be adjusted.
The most useful information you can give your doctor is related to timing of symptoms. When
did you last experience a symptom related to hypothyroidism? What happened? How did you
feel? Were you coping with relevant external factors, such as stress at that time?
You can also get ready for you next appointment with the right tools and the right
questions.
